MobiKwik wallet is an online prepaid account where a user can store money, to pay mobile recharge,DTH,electricity bill and pay on online shopping sites . The MobiKwik wallet has to be loaded with money once before it can be used across functions.MobiKwik provides users the option to add money using their debit or credit card, net banking, and ‘cash pay’, a doorstep cash collection service. MobiKwik wallet is a semi closed wallet authorized by Reserve Bank of India.

History

MobiKwik was founded by Bipin Preet Singh and Upasana Taku in 2009. The couple started MobiKwik to ease the payment problems faced by online users in India.Over the years, MobiKwik extended their service on mobile apps.

They tied up with various online merchants such as eBay India, BookMyShow, Dominos India, ShopClues and Snapdeal to provide accessibility of their wallet as a payment option on e-commerce sites.Moreover Mobikwik also introduced the feature of sending and receiving money via MobiKwik mobile app recently.Mobikwik raised under $5 million in its Series A funding from an unnamed US-based VC firm in 2013 and is expected to get another $30 million in the coming year.

Business Model

A user has to add money once to MobiKwik wallet and can then use it multiple times across functions, services, and service providers. Storing money in MobiKwik wallet reduces the risk of exposing card details or bank account details at multiple merchants when shopping online.

MobiKwik is one of the 40 odd applicants to apply for Payment Bank License which once they receive the license will turn their wallet into a savings account. It will enable users to earn interest on their wallet deposit as well as allow them to make withdrawal from the ATMs. This will revolutionize the wallet service in India.

MobiKwik Currently used by 15 million users, and claims to increase new user base by 1 million every month.
